Gaining more skill over the summer? How to?

Hi everyone! Just on my summer break now till september and will be going into my second year of art college.

I wanna get my drawing and painting skills up during the summer, I dont feel as though i am at the level that everyone else is in my class (most people are mature students)
What do you suggest? Drawing everyday? I want to push myself into drawing/painting things that put me off or i find too hard.

Any tips or tricks or any advice at all?

    Cheers

It's all about practice really. Do exercises too. Swap hands, do blind drawings, try switching from dry to wet mediums. It's all about getting that brain fired up. It helps no end to have critiques too if you have somebody to provide that.

I like to do this when I'm bored. Just arrange a few things on a table in front of you, then just plot them out with strict emphasis on their relationship towards eachother. Positioning most of all, say like some glasses and bowls and things. Just mapping out the shapes so that they look right in relation to eachother. It seems to have a positive effect when it comes to my larger work, it's so important to have your eye able to map things out.

Could try the Betty Edwards books, I am finding them really good.

I have a wonder around town with my camera, take a few photos of interesting looking people, or groups of people, and do drawings based on the photos. I find this much more interesting than life drawing. I try to get something done every day - even just a quick sketch.

It's also worth doing some mini projects and exploring areas you find interesting - having some work built up can take a lot of pressure off during the year.
