Sorry to hear it, could the school help out in any way?

    Book 1 Finn's Dream.. Folans
Book 2 The Four Friends . Folans

I think these are the only two that the children do not write in, the rest are all workbooks so probably would be near impossible to buy second hand. Thats a very long book list for first class so I would definatly speak to the school if things are tough.

Geez, that is excessive. I teach 1st, the kids only need to buy 5 books and they rent the rest.
Could you suggest a book rental scheme to your school?

Honestly, I'm blown by away by such an excessive list, it's crazy IMO.

i just researched the cheapest price online for the books and it comes to 90euro.

I would have no objection to paying it before. But we have both been struck down by redundancy like 1000s of other families im sure.

    its hard. :(

i should suggest the rental idea. I will. thanks

I'll be honest with you - your child doesn't even need half of them IMO. No teacher should be relying on such an excessive book list.

Don't make yourself feel guilty if you cannot afford such unnecessary expenditure.

Only 4 of those books need to be bought. The readers should be rented out by the school.

The rest of them are unnecessary - she could do equivalent work in copies.

That teacher must be related to a book publisher:rolleyes:

Probably not the teacher's decision alone!

But the list is excessive in the extreme. Have a word with the school and see what they have to say. I don't teach 1st but I can't imagine them using that many books!

Probably not, but he/she should be pushing hard to reduce that list. IMO:)

You won't get the readers second hand as they're new out this year. Taking that into consideration, I would definitely suggest a rental scheme to the school. Maybe the Parents' association could organise it?

I have a spare A Way With Words. PM me your address and I'll post it to you.

    Outrageous.

The school is obviously not following the revised primary school curriculum which discourages overuse of textbooks.

In fairness to the teacher they're using one book for SESE and they could be using a separate History, Geography and Science book. Depending on ethos of the school, a lot of teachers would also have an Alive-O reader and workbook on that list too. Most teachers use a lot of workbooks in 1st class as the children are too young/slow to write things into their copy in a way that's beneficial for them and a way that makes it easy for the teacher to see that they've understood a concept. The assessment book in Maths is the only one that should definitely go off the list. The handwriting one could go at a push...however having done headlined copies for Infants over the years I've found it very helpful to have a book with the copy as little ones need a good bit of time doing handwriting activities.

I'd imagine the markup on school books is immense - book publishers should be criticised more than the teacher involved. All of the books mentioned are in line with the new curriculum. If teachers pick and choose what they cover in line with the new curriculum they still end up photocopying an awful lot which means that the books might not cost much, but that the photocopying contribution for parents would be higher. I think the teacher is getting a lot of unnecessary criticism. The books listed are probably there because they're listed in the school plan for various subjects. Individual teachers don't always have much of a choice.

I think suggesting a rental scheme would be a great way to help reduce costs for parents. Let the principal know that you are having financial difficulties. Somtimes there's some money allocated to helping children who can't afford books. However, I'm on career break at the moment so I've only heard through the grapevine that this may no longer be the case.

It's atrocious that *free* education costs so much.

Well said, the teacher might have no control over the list.

I have taught first for five years now and i think that list is way too long. There are 3 books on my list and the rest are copies and folders.
The curriculum does discourage overuse of textbooks and there is limited learning in filling in workbooks imo. The teacher ends up teaching to the textbook.Even with my small amount of books I was pushed to finish them at the end of the year.
The teacher should have control over booklists.
