Got a Dell running Vista 32 HE with Pack 2 update, the line out to my desktop speakers has just given up, the headphone jacks back and front work fine. The levels are all maxed out. The properties show no errors and ideas?

Good man mike :D .. Are you sure you didnt blow it with the Liveline podcasts?

Seriously though, have you tried the speakers with your ipod or mp3 player to make sure that they are still working? (Or you could try to connect them to the headphone output as a test.. )

Check the Control Panel | Sound And Audio Properties. Make sure that the nothing is muted and the appropriate soundcard is set as the output. Do you have two soundcards or are you just using onboad audio?

ipod? me? You are mistaking me for some young fella.;)

The speakers work fine. I tested them with my external sound i/o. I'd use that all the time but it won't work with the browser software unfortunatly.

They do work via the headphone socket, looks like that will have to do.

well if the speakers are working, the it is an issue with
    i) the hardware, possibly the 3.5mm port is blown.
    or
ii) configuration of the soundcard software under Windows.

Did you buy an extra soundcard for your pc or are you just using the one that came with it?

No the only thing inside is the onboard Realtek I did a diagnostics check using the windows Mats_Run.AudioRecording.exe programme and it showed no problems.

I've remembered something, which is still the case when listening back through the headphones line out - the volume is "fixed" on my speakers. If I turn them right down or right up its the same. I dunno if this is related. The sound level can be dropped using the windows volume level control.

It does sound like a configuration issue tbh Mike. I've a client who has a laptop with a Realtek audio device and he is constantly hitting of something to either add reverb or switch headphone ports... Can you get in to the Realtek Control Panel and see how the Line Out is fixed? Maybe screen capture the thing and post it here. .

Also, are you sure you are plugging in to the right output? And have you changed any hardware software before this problem arose?

No changes made to anything on the hardware side, nor anything download for software recently either thinking about it.

I just had a look through device manager and nothing wrong there. In the Realtek Properties all the levels are 100% see attached file

I'm tempted to uninstall and reinstall. God, that used to be routine under win95/98!
