Is it on the Co2 or the CC

I assume they take the C02 if its cheaper but you know what they say about assumptions?

So is it 630 or 1566?

    • Road Tax for any car pre-2008 is always on the cc
    • Road Tax on a Jan-June 2008 car can be either CO2 or CC based (whichever is cheaper)
    • Road tax on a July 2008-onwards car is CO2 based.

VRT on any year car is based on the CO2 values now. If no CO2 value is available they charge 36% VRT.

2001 e46 330D (or 330i) is €1,293 road tax per annum as it is sub-3 litre.

I know to my cost that it's €1293 as John Gormley was "got at" by SIMI. There was a white paper published in late 2007 which suggested that they were going to make it optional for newly registered (including 2nd hand imports) cars to go onto the CO2 system. SIMI had kittens at the thought of a glut of imported 2nd hand diesels and at the last minute, they fudged it and moved the VRT to system and the motor tax to the CC-based system for pre-08 reg imports.

In between both events, I bought a 330d touring up North and it sickens me that I should be paying half the tax I do only for the lobbying of main dealers.

By all means get the 3 litre engine though. Much smoother and less stressed than the 2 litre lump and I get 43mpg+ from mine whilst not hanging around. More if I put my mind to it.
