We'll be driving from the ferry port in Cherbourg to Le Sables d'Olonne in Vendee in August. We'll be looking to stop off once along the way for lunch and to give our 3 kids a break from the car for an hour or so.

Can anyone recommend a good place to stop off. Does such a place exist on the French motorway system. I believe it takes about 6 hours to drive, we're staying at Le Littoral south of Le Sables d'Olonne. Thanks.

I cannot recommened a place to stop in a certain area but we always stop in one their frequent lay bys which have lots of green areas and picnic tables and most will have playgrounds and they are not hanging off a motorway like our new crappy ones. They are like proper parks nice and safe away from the motorway.

Getting something to eat is always easy because Just south of Nantes there are many many places to stop. I would recommened stopping South of Nantes at the MASSIVE E'Leclerc. Inside this large shopping centre are places to eat and outside there is a McDondals with a playground.

You can stock up on some essentials in the shopping centre.

We are off in this direction on Wednesday. We will be just south of Le Sables D'Olonne in Jard Sur Mer.

Im heading in a different direction though. Im heading from Calais around 140 miles further south first and then stopping in Jard Sur Mer afterwards.

They have some of the best motorway stops in the world as far as I'm concerned.

They are called "aires" and you never have to drive more than 15Kms to find the next one (though some are much bigger/smaller than others).

The larger ones (every 4th stop or so) will have multiple restaurants, often with very good quality food, tourists shops, play areas for kids, picnic benches and with the trucks diverted into a separate section.

If in a traffic jam, tune into FM 107.7 (no matter where you are in France) to get English traffic news every 30 mins.

The drive will take you about 5 hours (not 6) non-stop and will only cost €6 in toll roads.

The joys of Brittany being the only part of France with no motorway tolls :)

Not hard when they also don't have many motorways. :p

Thanks for that Berty. We just want to get the journey down, over and done with as quick as possible. I don't know if we'd have the time to actually leave the motorway. Ferry arrives @ 11am. We want to get there in plenty of time to set up the beds, have dinner, etc etc. We'll have time on the way back though!

The place is adjoining the Motorway so no problem there. You cannot arrive onto site(most places) until at least 4pm so you have loads of time. We are arriving around 7:45AM into Calais so have a long day to kill.

My opinions are of course based on the fact that I have no kids so my priorities are different.
