Going to have a look at one with low mileage and a full service history tomorrow. Checked the usual sites like honest John etc but can't find much about the x-type diesel. Does anyone have experience with them? Are they a reliable car and what should I be looking out for? Thanks.

They're based heavily on the Mondeo so I'd imagine that problems would be pretty similar to the sister car. I think the engine is the same. I'm not a mechanic and I've never had one but since you ask and nobody else replied...

PS - There are two diesels, the 2.0d and the 2.2d, the latter's derivation I'm pretty unfamiliar with. If I were looking to buy I'd almost certainly go to the UK to source one as they're a rare bird on this side of the Irish Sea.

as far as i know the 2.0 diesel in these is the same as the one in a mondeo, so it should be quite reliable mechanicly. not sure on the rest of the car

As said the 2.0 ones are Mondeo engined, the 130bhp version of the TDCi or whatever it is in the Mondeo. They are also front wheel drive, not all wheel drive like in the 2.5 petrol models. I know two lads with the petrol ones and they had no trouble with anything really, when I was a rep one of the directors got a new X type 2.0 diesel, nice bus in fairness.

Presumably they suffer from the same DMF and injector problems that the Mondeo suffers from though.

My uncle had one. Only 5 speed. Think they're 115hp. Couldn't get to like it

On the other hand, I traded in a mondeo ebony 130 a few years back, prepared for it being a high spec garda car but fell in love with it.

I'd rather an excellent entry level car to an entry level excellent car

I'd sooner get a rover 75/mg zt or the afformentioned mondeo 130

Make sure to do an extended test-drive. Apparently a lot of people are burning out the clutches because there's no footrest and they're ending up riding the clutch.

Both the 2.0 (130 not 115 as above) and the 2.2 (155) are from the Mondeo.

Auto boxes can be soft - manual preferably

Suspension should be checked over as they ware fast

All wheel drives can be hard on CV's

    Front ABS sensors can fail

Some electrical niggles such as dash displays can disappear

    There's one in the family....

Personally I think it's a nice car. Ok there could be a few more gadgets in it but the 130 bhp and 155 bhp engines are decent and there's plenty of torque in it.

No problems at all with the one in the family.

Have a 2.1 V6 Sport petrol 2003 X-Type for the last year and a half (Not a Diesel I know) and have had no trouble whatsoever with it. One of the Most reliable cars I have had in the last few years. I usually change every year but have kept the X-Type for a bit longer as I have had to put no money into it.
Very comfortable on long drives for both Passengers and Drivers and you could fit a couple of bodies in the boot its so big. Check out the Jag Forums for all info you need.
