Canon Fix it

If you're Canon camera is out of warranty and has decided not to turn on where do you go to get it fixed? I'm really looking for the cheapest solution here - I've been quoted €160 + VAT as the standard fix it rate.

It's an EOS 1000D that needs to be reset and there doesn't appear to be a way for me to do it. The WP Light just flashes as if it's busy when I turn the camera on. If there was just one of them buttons like on an mp3 player to reset it I'm convinced it'd fix the problem!

I don't know how long Canon DSLRs can keep track of the time and
date when the battery is removed. It is certainly longer than it takes
to charge the battery. Try removing the battery for more than 24 hours.
I suspect the camera memory is kept alive by a large capacitor which
    will discharge eventually.

Before you do that, try a different memory card. Also try using
a different lens or powering up without a lens attached.

Running out of ideas..... I hope you are right about the camera just
    needing to be reset.

I tried leaving the battery out for a couple of days but no joy. No harm in leaving it out for longer if there's a chance it'll work. I'll give the other ideas a shot.

    Thanks

you're happy there's no water damage, impact damage possible?
could be a dead circuitboard, which won't be peanuts to replace.

There's every possibility that it's something different to my gut feeling of something simple. I don't think it'd be either water or impact damage but it could well be. It has been raining at events I've been at lately but I'm generally very careful to keep the camera dry.

I think you and I are both clutching at straws in the hope than a
simple and zero-cost cure will do the job. Does it lose the
time and date after a couple of days?

Where are you? Maybe some of the forum members would let
you try a card, lens and battery from their 450D or 500D to
see if it makes any difference. I can help if you are in Cork City.

Thanks for the offer. My sister has a canon so I'll try it out with her battery to see how that goes. I plan on borrowing her camera anyway until I get mine back to life.
