Portlaois - Tullamore Road whats it like.

Im travelling to Athlone from Cork and considering using the M8 to Portlaois then take the road to Tullamore eventually onto the Dublin Galway road?
Is this better than going up through the country through Thurlas Birr etc?

from M7 to Northside of Portlaoise, is a bit of a slog somedays, but from town bounds through to M6 is pretty ok. Mountmellick can be a bottleneck at peak times, and Killeigh can be a speed trap, but it's probably an easier road to drive than Thurles to Birr to Athlone

Where are u heading to, as I travel Cork to Athlone every week.

    Roscommon Town.

Whenever I go that way I go up the middle but get stuck in all the towns Thurlas I hate, people just double park outside Supermacs all the time then Birr is one long miserable place for traffic.

Personally, I'd go M8,N62,N61, you're adding miles and a toll for very little gain going M8/M7/N80/N52/M6/N6/N61.

It's possible to skip the square in Thurles. It's possible to skip Birr too, via Crinkle.

That would be great any pointers?

for Thurles, follow sign for "truckstop", opposite the Erin foods factory, then then take second left, InishFallen/Iona Ave, straight thru the crossroads to mathew Ave, then ur back on the road at the right turn back towards Templemore

I go to athlone few times a year and m8 to portlaoise I find is the most relaxing route now, depending in the time of day is not too long till tullamore then the m6 straight into athlone.
