    Hi,

Living in an apartment with no fireplace so my flatscreen is hung on the wall - its at eye level when sitting down, so the top is around 1.2metres from the ground. I'v been thinking of putting a mantlepiece over the tv, one reason is to hide the plugs an upc box which were stupidly placed half way up the wall by th builder, the other is to make the area a bit more of a focal point. we'll be able to put up the usual mantlepiece stuff like pictures bla bla bla.

we were hoping just to have a thick modern wooden piece that has a floating effect.

loking for opinions on whether this would look good. I'll try and post up an image later of the area

    Cheers

I think its more a floating shelf effect that you want as opposed to a mantlepiece. I would suggest putting up 2 - 3 floating shelves and stagger them slightly so that they don't look so uniform. You can also get floating boxes (shelves) which would look really well and hide your poug sockets etc. Bo Concept do some really nice variations.

    No affliliation

i would put one long floating shelf the length of the tv or an inch longer on either side, then put a very tall slender vase centre way on shelf, to take away the bareness of the wall over the mantle, along with a few framed pics on the mantle, it would look beautiful, you do not have to go for very expensive wood, as you can stain a cheaper piece to look like mahogany or whatever shade suit the room or tv

    How about this:

If you are looking for a modern look (and you have the room), you could use some walnut veneer to build a box that would sit on the face of the wall in question. Make it deep enough to hold the UPC box and above the TV put in a recess where you could but something decorative or even some books or dvds. This would sort the problem of the unsightly UPC box, a place behind to store all the cables and a very funky feel to the room. I know it sounds like a lot of work but a good carpenter could do it without it costing the earth.

    What you think?

Ye I was going to post something similar....its like a unit with the tv inside can have shelves or hidden units open cd racks dvds or oprn for photos etc:
Think the big unit be best hidden with everything- I have seen it done shouldnt be too hard for good carpenter

I think Ikea have some ready made units- so maybe ahve a look there see what were kinda talking about-

Also if you go with floating shlves ikea also have these great w style shelves
