    well,
sorry if this thread is in the wrong section.
but anyway, im currently a Civil Engineering Management student.
im suppose to go out on Work Placement for 3rd year starting this Septemeber.
do any of think there would be much of a chance of getting placement with a civil engineering company for say 9 months (twud be fairly slim im guessing with the recession and such) and how would i go about getting it??
    cheers

Basically how you go about getting it is looking up the names of all the companies that you can find and sending them an email, or knocking on the door.
To be honest - and I'm just trying to give you the reality here - you haven't got much hope. I've several friends in consultancies and in the last 2 months they've gone on 3 day weeks. I myself am finishing up in a few weeks too.
If you've prepared to go on site, maybe some of the contractors might have something but that's pretty slim too.
Would you be prepared to go to England? There's some work over there and I know a lot of contractors have moved some of their business to the UK.

ya, i was thinking alrigh that chances of getting anything here in ireland would be slim.
i was thinking about England alright, but i wouldnt really be pushed as there would be a bit of hassle sorting out stuff to go over. its not like il be over there long either.
ah, il try something anyway. better try , than do nothing at all like.
    sound

Definitely try, I'm not saying give up. If you don't ask, you won't get! I'm just saying try and think outside the box a bit in your approach or in who you approach. It will take a lot of research on your part, but you never know what might come your way.

Company I know took on two guys but they aren't getting paid, so I wouldn't expect to receive wages. You might outside the country though. From what I hear the work in the UK is slowing down a bit due to the new government cutting a lot of work, but look further afield like the US.

BTW, don't forget Northern Ireland as an option.
