Im on a level 8 approved course, and currently going into 3rd year in september...

I havent applied for a grant before because

1) the money has been there to pay for it (i think I was still eligable for a grant though)
2)the hassle i've had with college i didnt want to hav another headache to sort

like many others in the last 2 or 3 years, family members are now out of work, and even though I was eligable before, because the money was there, i never looked into a grant,

however i'm not so sure the money is fully there this year ...

is it possible to get a grant now in 3rd year or is it something you had to do from 1st year ?

Nope, close friend of mine got her grant in third year due to a change in circumstances. Had to fight for it though. Give your Council/VEC a call.
