I've had tinnitus my whole life bar a few years in the middle. It doesn't bother me at all to be honest, when I was younger I thought everyone heard the noise :o

Here's a page with some useful info. They do have leaflets and stuff, maybe you could ask your doctor for them.
It does get better with time, I hope you are not having too much trouble with it.

Is there any online tests to determine how bad one's tinnitus might be??

Just heard this article on the news

No immediate help for tinnitus sufferers but hopefully in the near future.

I suffer from it too - irritating, especially when trying to fall asleep. Generally it doesnt bother me but also reading into it now to see if it can be fixed / cured or even remotely alleviated.

You need to download some white noise onto your ipod. Someone I know has had great success with this cd - he realised that he didn't hear his tinnitus at all in the shower so went looking for water sounds. It's also available as a download: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pure-Rain-Nature-Sounds-CD/dp/B000BK76TC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1277894401&sr=8-1-catcorr

Is this a potential short term fix or does this help in general terms?

It's just a way of disguising the noise. I'm no expert, I'm just in touch with a lot of people who suffer with tinnitus due to inner ear disorders. As far as I know there is no cure for tinnitus, but an ENT specialist would be the person to consult about it.

I could be wrongly self diagnosing myself here - but I occasionally (couple of times a month) hear and get annoyed by a peculiar ringing noise in my ear - and it's loudest when I am trying to get some sleep. The noise is that of a typical tropical forest at night - which is very familiar to me as I grew up in the tropics. (Here's a Youtube clip if you want to hear what I hear in my head - it's very similar to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtWPc69MMN0).

I always knew this is all in my head, but I had never heard of the term 'Tinnitus' though, thanks OP for this thread.

There is no cure for tinnitus although your sitiuation may change and it can go away (I wouldn't pin all your hopes on this happening though)

If you are hearing the noise in waves like the clip it is usually your pulse, just fyi :)

There have been some recent breakthroughs in treating the symptoms of Tinnitus, particularly in generating inverse out-of-phase sound waves that cancel out the sound that your ear thinks it's hearing, but this only works for certain types of tinnitus.

Myself, I've learnt to mentally tune it out over the years.

You can also try listening to sea-noises on a loop in your MP3 player.

Mine is similar, I tend to hear what sound like forest sounds, crickets and such, no too different from what I would have heard as a child. Either that or I am mad ... take yer pick.

Does anyone find that certain foods makes your Tinnitus worse?

Some people find that reducing their salt intake helps their tinnitus. There's reliable information HERE

You should seek a referral to an ENT though because there are many causes of tinnitus.

+1, particularly if the tinnitus is present in one ear only.
