Sat receiver buzzes TV?

I have recently set-up a Philex satellite receiver to receive Free to Air on an LG LCD TV. Everything works fine, but....when the sat channel picture has a lot of white in it (such as at the end of certain ads for Tesco, 3 mobile), the TV emits a very distinct buzzing noise, almost as if it was powering up to display. I am finding this intrusive and annoying. Turning off the volume doesn't change this. The signal strength and quality are generally above 70%, and often above 80%.Any ideas of cause and solution to improve?

Try turning the contrast down on the TV and if there is a contrast setting on the box try turning it down to see if it elimenates your problem.

I have the same issue with a tv and a signal from a wireless video sender. Does it happen also when peoples name come up on screen, like in tv news reports ?

I wish I knew what caused this. Watty would know. Come back Watty !

Yes, it also happens when the sat receiver Favourites text box is being displayed on screen, or when Sky show a lot of text at the bottom of their picture.

Tried turning down the contrast as suggested, but no noticeable improvement.

    White noise.

    Its caused by crap cabelling.

At a guess you are using a scart from the box to the TV ? The scart is the problem 9 times out of 10. The ones that come with cheap boxes are crap) Try a different one or a hdmi. Guarantee you its that.

If its not that then its wither the the sat cable you are using or the connectors are not put on properly or you have the cable running over a rake of 12v power supplies.

Rule them out one by one. Try and start with a scenario where you have only 2 items powered up the receiver and the TV to narrow the search for the IF.

STB, thanks for the reply.Scart cable - had already replaced this with a new one - no improvement. No HDMI output socket on set-top box.Cabling - was pretty careful with the F connectors, so don't think these can be improved. Cable was running on the attic floor over a number of 240V power lines. Have raised this off the floor about two feet (best can do) - no improvement. Further investigation has found that with the set-top box sound off, but the tv sound on, buzzing occurs. The other way around (tv sound off, set-top box sound working) no buzzing. This, together with the fact that buzzing happens when the Favourites text box is generated and displayed, leads me to wonder if the set-top box itself may be the source.

Well ultimately muting the sound on your TV will mute all sound sources including buzzing!

This still sounds to me like a scart problem. What are the other outputs on the receiver ? Is it scart only ? A dodgy/earth type situation on a box would cause this buzzing alright but you'd also get a nasty belt from touching the box if that was the case. Try jigling the Scart cable at the back of the box.

How many scart inputs on the back of the TV ? Try the other one if there are 2. Have you got an other TV that you can connect this box to rule out a scart input problem on that particular TV.

What cabling are you using from the attic ? Its not coax is it ?

That is not 100% correct. It will mute any buzzing that has been accumulated on the sound output via the speakers only.

I've a Samsung TV which can buzz (from the back of the tv - not from the speakers - so mute has no effect) when you choose certain picture level settings (contrast, brightness, backlight levels, energy saving modes). It is noticeably affected by the 'darkness' of the image - it buzzes more as the image darkens. In my case it is a fault of the TV (I believe it is the back lighting circuit) - seems to be a common enough issue on some Samsung models as I've seen other online reports.

The OPs post refers to buzzing from a sat box from IF from the Sat receiver. I would expect the TV to stop this partcular issue when the main TV is muted.

The source of which is a badly earthed/cabled satelitte box.

Bought a Philips scart lead this morning. Noticeable improvement in sound quality. Not sure the buzz has gone away entirely, need to monitor, but think it has improved just on the basis of the Favourites text box test. Yes, jiggling the scart cable at the back of the set-top box does affect the sound - the issue seems to be the quality of the fit between the scart cable end and the set-top box connector. TV receives digital RTE with no buzz issues, so don't think the tv is the problem. Thanks again.
