Hi, I am terrified of losing my licence and was wondering if I can get a duplicate made or can you only get a duplicate if lost/stolen? Any help appreciated thanks

If you lose it, you must report it to the Gardai. They'll tell you how to go about getting a replacement. BTW, it must be good to have so little to worry about.

Ah, if you lose it, report it and get a new one. Don't know what the fees are but it's the easiest option.

Lost mine recently enough, not too much hassle to replace it. You can get the requisite form in your nearest motor tax office, take it to your local guarda station where they sign it then submit it to the tax office, you also need 2 passport photos. Handed mine in on tuesday, currently waiting for my replacement licence.

When I had a provisional licence I lost it, got a new one and ended up finding the original again so I had 2 of them. No point getting a backup copy imo, I see no real advantage it takes as much effort as it would if you just lost the thing. I'm not sure what the situation is if you're stopped by the guards and asked to produce the licence in the interim period but I imagine they would be reasonably understanding.

You can only ever have one license which is valid, getting a "backup" one is no good as this invalidates the original one you had to make the backup one your current license. All licenses have different numbers.

There are two numbers on a driving licence, the licence file number and the stock number. The first doesn't change...

A useful tip is to scan and email to yourself a colour copy of your licence. This works equally well with your passport should you are ever abroad and lose your documents. Could be a handy fix that costs nothing and your details are always accessable as long as you have access to the net.
