Did this last year, swim is ok, had a few probs sighting the turnaround buoy but otherwise not too bad.
One thing I learnt from last year is to keep swimming as far in to shore as possible, running through the water nearly killed me.
Cycle isn't as bad as made out. One tough hill about 5k in, other than that it's pretty flat.
The last 5 or 6k back into Skerries is more or less all downhill.
The roads were open to traffic last year so be careful going through Skerries village.

Run is handy, up and down the sea-front.

I swam the swim course today after work and there were loads of little tiny Jellyfish      . I HATE JELLYFISH
Didn't "sea:p" any big brown ones thank god or i would have had a major sh1t hemorrhage.
I hope the water drops a good few degree's by next Sunday:rolleyes: to get rid of them.
Will they be moving some of the boats or will we be swimming around/ through them.
1st Olympic for me so its black hills x2 for me :D

I just signed up to the sprint at the last minute. I realised this is probably the only weekend I have time to a triathlon this summer without treking out of Dublin.

I'm a bit alarmed by the jellyfish. Hopefully all the Olympic swimmers will clear the way first!!

I did the swim today off the RNLI slipway. The water was incredibly calm. There were some jellyfish and some very very friendly seals. I will be doing the Olympic, so I will be starting and finishing on the slipway but wish I was starting on the beach with the sprinters (easier to find you space that way).
Did the sprint last year. Swim was okay. First half of bike is tough, but second half is very fast (will have to do it twice). Run is flat, but a bit tedious..
The layout looks better this year with the transition at the bandstand, but it will interesting to see how everyone navigates through the boats on the way to/from the North Strand.
    Best of luck everyone!!

Did the race today. I found the cycle very tough. Nice day over all.
Seemed to be a bit confusion over the swim route at the start line
but that helped with the nerves

Enjoyed the race yesterday. The water was cool and the cycle was challenging with the hills and the wind. I thought that the run may have been a bit short of 5k though, particularly looking at the results of others as well.
Did anyone have an accurate GPS route of the run, and for that matter the cycle too with elevation?

OMG, I swear to god, i will never do a sea swim like that again. The jellyfish completely freaked me out. Saw my first one about 200m out, about 6foot under, but it was big, then another a little further on, then I spotted one about 2 feet below me that was about 2 feet in diamater, and this was what caused me to go into a near panic. Also I got very cold in the water from 300m - 600m, and also drifted onto the rocks. What a disaster. Came out of the water 2nd last to a big applause. :) I then found transition empty. :( Was so cold in T1 that it took me over 4 minutes. Very cold on the bike and on the bike I was a bit dilerious for a bit (because I probably did 1000m of swimming!). Bike tough, but enjoyable enough. Enjoyed run. Did very well on that but a swim of 30.03 ruined any chance of a PB. And to to think I swam tri athy olympic in 31mins 2 years ago. :o

Andrew, sorry to hear about your bad luck. At least next time you'll have more endurance!

I did the Sprint on Sunday. It was really good and I thought it was well organised. I was really impressed by getting my results straight away on a piece of paper. That is very cool.

The swim was fine though I did get a little disorientated. I also swallowed a good bit of sea water so I had a bit of a stitch during the cycle and run.

The cycle was pretty tricky too. I didn't think there could be so many hills in the Skerries area!

    I'm doing this next weekend!
    Which distance are you doing?

I won the entry so I have a choice, haven't made up my mind yet but i'm kind of leaning towards the sprint!!

Have you done this race before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

    I am doing the sprint.

I did the sprint in 2009. Swim this year is back to the way it was that year afaik.

    What's the swim like?

In 2009 it was a triangle shape out and back to a bouy, water was clear but the bouy was tiny that year.. about the size of a football which caused issues.
Running beach start, and no much waves/swell.

Transition to the bike goes out by a pub which meant alot of broken glass on the ground from what I remember... so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks a mill for the info :D
Hopefully they'll have a bigger bouy if that caused issues the last time!
