Question about paying duty for an item

I am buying a hard drive from the united states, from MN (minnesota) and I am just wondering about the import duty on it.

They have told me that they will be unable to send the item as a gift (fair enough) and that I should check with the local govt for charges.

Couldn't be bothered to be honest and have no problem paying, but does anyone know what it would be likely to cost me.

The hard drive is small, 2.5 sata hard drive, 12.5 mm in height, width is not specified but would be smaller than height.

But I guess its the cost that matters here, the item is 165.95 dollars, including 30 dollars shipping, sent in USPS international flat rate envelope.

Not sure what info is not needed there but if anyone could tell me what I am likely to have to pay that would be great.

Edit: they can't label as lesser value either, however.

How is import duty paid as I know some people who haven't paid it. Are they breaking the law or is it up to customs to come find us so to speak?

You'll pay VAT at 21%, plus a handling fee of €5-15.

Those hard disks can be bought locally for very little money now. It seems quite a waste to buy one from the US, wait longer, have no real consumer rights other than whatever manufacturer's warranty may be with it and pay more for it when you could easily have all that for less.

For best places to buy you could try the Dublin forum, or the Computers Tech forum. www.elara.ie, www.komplett.ie or just go into PC World.
