Hi all, just a quick question. There is a car parked on the road in my estate where I have lived for a year. This car has not moved since I've been here, and has no tax or insurance. It's parked on the main road into the estate and it a potential crash scene! Is there anything I can do about it?

If the estate has been taken in charge by the council then there should be a specific department that should be able to help, if the estate is private then you should contact your management company.

I've heard different responses from people who have been in a similar position, some councils don't want to know, others will remove it, and more often than not nothing is done unless said vehicle has no reg plates.

Thanks for the reply, it has 1 reg plate on the back, none on the front. Management company say we need to contact the council ourselves which I don't understand seeing as they've sent out threats of clamping in the estate for other reasons so they do have some sort of power.

If you're in a managed estate it is most likely private land and the council will tell you to contact the management company.

Well its possible to have a management company and have the council look after the roads, but if they haven't taken them from the builder then they will do nothing about it as its not there responsibility.

The other option might be to contact the local Gardaí explaining the situation, however the regular shift may not want to deal with it in which case I'd find out who the local community Garda is, and contact them to explain the situation to see if they can get it removed what with it being abandoned and a traffic hazard.

If it somehow lost it's back plate before you called again it may get more attention.;)

Exactly. Done this before myself and the car was collected by the council the same day

Also email them and mention its a health and safety issue. Councils respond to things in writing much quicker than a phone call as the email paper trail provides evidence in the case of future health and safety problems.

Aye, I'd just sit patiently *cough* until *cough cough* the back plate should happen to fall off, and some kids happen to run away with it... *cough*

    Should be moved then :D

Does anyone know if this is legal or illegal? If I was seen by the garda removing a licence plate from a car on the side of the main road in my estate that had no tax and insurance on it could I get into trouble for it? Id be careful about doing that OP, might be best to check out the legalities before taking any action. It might be an eyesore but hardly worth getting a record for. IMO

Some Management companies are mad for clamping cars and removing them,

but in an Estate run by the Council parked up cars are left for months!

I know of one estate that the only way the Council came to collect a car

was once it was a burnt out shell! They accidently caught fire i guess.

Of course it's illegal, you're damaging someone elses piece of, non moving for in excess of a year, motoring property. Hence why after a year of being parked there, like the front number plate, it may fall of itself *cough* ;)

If it,s blocking the path at all and forcing wheelchair users or people with buggies to use the road they will probably remove it.
