Am thinking of headign to Crimea in Ukraine for a weeks holiday.

Ive been most of the obvious places in Europe and am looking for something a bit different. I was thinking of a couple of days in Kiev and then a few days on a beach in Crimea. Want to relax as well as have a good nightlife..

Ive heard it will be warm at that time of year and also pretty cheap. My girlfriend is Russian so the language should not be a problem.

Can anyone recommend it or recommend somewhere else a bit different?

Ive always found eastern europeans more welcoming than west europeans.

Cheap, dirty and unwelcome...you could say the same about the Spanish or Greek islands...

if you're looking to go specifically to eastern europe you should try asking in the russian language forum.

I was in Odessa a few times back in 2003-4.

    Loved the place .

The Potemkin Step/Stairs are worth a visit, there are the usual guys trying to sell you fake USSR stuff .

But if you have ever seen the film with the baby in the pram rolling down the stairs which was said to be one of the first ' action ' shots of it's kind.

The view from the top ( where the town is ) is wonderful.

I never got time to go to the beach or anything.

    Enjoy !

    Hey all,

Am heading to Odessa in May. Planning on getting the train from Lviv.

Not quite sure how to get back to Dublin from there - will probably go from either Kyiv or Moscow (via London). Other possibilities are Istanbul (two days on a ferry??) or Bucharest (via Moldova?). Will prob spend a few days, whatever the city.

    Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

I stayed in Alushta near Yalta back in 2004. That was summer so I don't know what the weather is like this time of year. Accommodation was $3 a night. One thing I found strange was that you paid to go on the beaches. The resort was probably a bit tacky, outdoor karaoke, openair discos, but there was so much to visit around it. We went to the Livadia palace where the famous Yalta conference was held. We went to Sevastapol, which was great. You can visit Balaklava there but we didn't have time. We also visited Sudak and Novy Svit. I just loved it all, even the tackiness of the resorts, would love to go back. I hope it hasn't changed!

Edited to say - saw the movie Koktebel a few years ago, and have kind of wanted to go there since!

You can fly with Malev via Budapest into Odessa, probably the most convenient option.

Air Baltic have decent fares to that part of the world, via Riga. They go to Odessa, Simferopol and also Kiev, so you could do an open jaw. Turkish have a few options too.

I haven't been, but an interesting trip to Lviv and Kiev a few years ago has encouraged me to think about it.
