Heading to Sicily for a week with the gf in August. Flying into Catania so are planning on staying in Taormina first for a few nights but I think a week might be a little too long there?? Would the Aeloian islands be a worthwhile visit, is there much to do on these islnads and are the near the Taormina area?

Hi Realy McCoy- how did the trip to Sicily go and any recommendations? Heading to Sicily for about 2 weeks during the summer, was planning to base myself in & around Catania for a week and then head towards the west of the island- possibly renting apartments and using a car to explore the island on a daily basis

Yeah, thinking of flying into Trapani in Aug with a view to renting a car and finding our way round the island for a week. Is it possible to pick up reasonable places to stay for a reasonable price ?

    Hi I am Pie

After plenty of searching through venere, hotels etc and using tripadvisor we managed to get plenty of accommodation options. We're moving around for practically the whole trip so apartments were out as an option.

We did our research on where we wanted to stay (taking into account travel time etc) and from that used tripadvisor to locate accommodation in the areas we wanted to stay in. Like anywhere else i suppose, you can pay plenty if you want

we were in Sicily last July.
For those near Trapani, I recommend the lovely village of Scopello (swimming in the Tonnara is a must!).
We stayed here, it was basic but absolutely fine, pretty nice continental breakfast and decent owners, think it was about 80 euro a night IIRC:

However my top tip for somewhere near Catania or Taormina, is this place:

Definitely a bit more expensive (maybe 150 a night? though we might have got a deal) but worth it, awesome giant pool, really good breakfast and a quality restaurant too (also pricy, also worth it; part of the Slow Food Movement).
