I was at the Heineken Final in Paris last month and it was probably more packed than this but they didn't keep us in a pen!

firstly ...paparazzi is definately the wrong thing to call them !! ... they are sports/press photographers !! Paparazzi hunt and chase celebs .... these people are sports/press photographers

as for the rope around them...its to escort them to a particular section - this stops them walking around the place stopping and taking pics of fans (or searching the crowd for celebs/political figures) inside the stadium.

have been "escorted" to photo areas plenty of times..... sometimes photographers are limited as to where they can shoot from - concerts are a pain in that respect ..... especially when you are shooting from the sound desk !!! ...a 600mm will get you full length of the person....NOT GOOD !

    Still, I've never been escorted to a photo-pit at a gig in a rope-pen!!!

Surely someone with a baton labelled "I smash lenses" would be sufficient! :D

LOL now that is funny :D
I'm thinking they could use them (the togs) for the sheep dog trials :p

I beg to differ - When they guys behind you bang your head with their lenses to get you out of they way and will push you out of the way "paparazzi" seems appropriate :(

I think a rope around is pointless as if one side bulges the other will restrict - there are better ways of doing it. Don;t think its really going to stop them taking pictures of the crowed.

Escorting is fine but I'm not a fan of the dog on a leash treatment particularly when you have a 400mm hanging by your side.

FROM WIKI: Paparazzi (singular: Paparazzo) is an Italian term used to refer to photojournalists who specialize in candid photography of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent people. Paparazzi tend to be independent contractors, unaffiliated with a mainstream media organization.[1]

the correct term would be a "media scrum" .... when a number of photographers are put in a specific area and battling to get the best pic. (in this case they are put inside the rope...so view is restricted...so best position is limited)

it takes getting used to but generally it shows how ignorant your fellow photographer is ...and how they dont care about you as long as they get their image..... best way to deal with someone who hits you with their lens to get a pic (and doesnt apologise) ....is to hold your hand up or put your own lens up in the air....if you are in front of them, it should block their view....alternatively.... get out of the way .... usually its only a couple of mins that the person will have their lens raised to get their image.... this is part of the job. (another photographer in your way...happens all the time at photocalls)

as for the crowd pics, I mean the rope stops photographers going over to people in the crowd and setting up pics of fans (usually pretty girls in tight tops) ...or cute kids,..... strangely its rarely the actual hardcore beer bellied fan !!

    Got ya.

Your right that it takes some getting used to. I know what to expect at the big games anyway.

Lets just hope that the hardcore beer bellied fan doesn't refer to a pretty girl in a tight top!! ;)

Thought it was a funny pic though

by the look of things there must be around 100+ photogs at these world cup games wonder who gets preference to vantage point ,no doubt its the agency guys ,my feeling is whoever gets to the venue first and sets up should not be told then to move for a late comer agency photog which i have experienced once or twice:mad:

Not the case. They're assigned spots depending on the agency. We have 2 lads over there as of today. Not sure of what spots they have yet but I reckon it's along the touchline.

Just watching the matches there are some brutal positions.

Wouldn't fancy getting held up at gun point in my hotel room and have all my stuff nicked anyway.

Better watching on tv with a few beers!

Apparently one photographer even ended up getting his lens smashed, or so I heard. I think it was when holland were playing, Not sure on details though.

Was corralled in one of these at the end of the Nations Cup in the RDS and one of the agency guys kept stretching the rope out and generally acting the maggot (blocking view) so gave the rope and good pull, seemed to work too.

thats the way it should be .... some photographers are just ignorant of the rules and do their own thing.
