Do you mean retrofit the new AC refrigerant to the old car (R12 to R134A) or retrofit an AC compressor to a car that never had one? If it's the latter it depends if the car was designed to have AC as an option, which most cars do. It'd be the wiring that'd be the 'interesting' part imo. Easiest thing would be to pull one from a same model/year car that has AC (breakers) and work from there.

The latter. My car had the option of A/C but mine doesn't have it so what's involved in a retro fit? Canister, wiring, hooking it up to the vents?

    Indeed. haha.

Now, for that type of Golf I know there were two types of Air Con. The one with the panel that is pictured in the thread and one that seems much more basic and is just one "On/Off" button. It is possible that the more basic one is much more simpler to put in since there could be less wires to feck around with so maybe if your car just as a basic style Air con it could be more simple.

Im not totally discounting an AC retrofit untill I can find more info of putting the basic yoke in.

Its just one button there so the centre console would have to be taken apart, ahh, feck. Its a lot of work either way haha.
