I've a 02 clio 1.5 dci, and most definitely theres a bearing going in the rear, but I dont know which side, there isn't any play on either side. Just a deafening noise between 100-120kph

Any ideas on how to find out which side it is and would I be able to replace the bearing myself?

Jack up each side and spin the wheel or grab the wheel top and bottom and try to rock the wheel. If you hear noise or the wheel rocks thats the faulty bearing. Sometimes both go together. I would recommend getting a local mechanic to replace them as they can sometimes be a bitch to get off the old bearing but it is possible to do yourself with decent tools, a vice, a good lump hammer and plenty of cursing . I got 2 front bearings on an Almera replaced recently for €200 so shop around (too lazy to do myself:D).

Often a bearing will make most noise when that wheel is under load. So if you drive around a left hand curve at say 50 mph and the noise gets a lot louder, it's probably the driver's side front or rear bearing.

If your Clio has rear discs you'll have the option of buying rear brake discs with the bearings already pressed into them and fitting a bearing is then as easy as fitting a brake disc. If it's a front bearing that's gone it will require pressing into the hub.

As already said they usually go together and there is no point in doing one wheel your better off changing both set of bearing on the two wheels, because you8 could find out a week or two after changing one set and the othe will start making noise

If you are tackling the job yourself, be careful as to what way the centre hub nuts tighten/loosen. Many years ago I sheared the threads on the half shaft on a Sierra because the nut loosened in the opposite direction to what it might normally do, ie. it loosened clockwise and tightened anti clockwise. Something to do with countering the possibility of coming loose thanks to the rotation, or something like that. Then to add insult to injury, after getting the replacement half shaft (from a breakers) I discovered that the two half shafts were different lengths, as the diff if off centre! Still, those lessons hard learned are never forgotten!

Well, I did the job myself last week, was handy enough, replaced both sides.

Now I can drive and listen to the radio at the same time!

    Thanks for the advice!

    Jasus well done.
Could you explain how you changed the bearings?
My front one is on the way out (Opel Zafira) and me local garage is after quoting me 350 to change it this morning.

Well, I couldnt tell you about the front one's, coz I did the rear ones which are more straight forward. Because of the front wheel drive, and all that. Someone else on here should be able to help you out I'd say
