Great, another of Richard's list threads.

If you want to talk about ninja films and think that Ninja Assassin is the epitome of the genre then obviously it's the only ninja film you've ever seen. It was a rather mediocre action film which felt like the entire production couldn't afford a few lights. The direct to DVD Scott Adkins starring Ninja was a far superior film which unfortunately didn't get near enough attention.

Ninja cinema belongs to one man, Sho Kosugi who incidentally enough played the villain in Ninja Assassin. Kosugi starred in a slew of 80s action classics for Cannon/Golan-Globus logo including the classic Nine Deaths of the Ninja and Pray for Death.

    IMDB would disagree:

imdb ratings are not a reliable means of gauging a films quality. Also it's rather unfair to use them to compare a film which played in cinemas across the world to one which went direct to DVD with no marketing.

Hey Darko, why do you think Ninja is better than Ninja Assassin?

The action was better, there was more of it and most importantly the fight scenes were directed by someone who knows how to direct action. Ninja Assassin is decent enough but most of the fights involve men dressed in black fighting in rooms bathe in shadow making it very difficult to see what's happening.

Remember watching these as a kid.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enter_the_Ninja (actually never saw this til recently)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenge_of_the_Ninja

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_III:_The_Domination

They're utter rubbish by todays standards (probably rubbish even by the standards of the time as well) but I do remember having a fondness for them. Check out the sequence of the Ninja on the golf-course in the third movie just to get a taste of how ridiculous they were.

The credits alone gave you an idea of just what you were letting yourself in for, pure unadulterated 80s cheese.

It seems their is no such thing as a very good nevermind classic Ninja film. I think its cos the Ninja is such a scumbag character. No honour like the Samurai.

Heres the best ninja scene I've seen, the unexpected high kicking climax to a slightly strange thriller.

I think Ninja's get a bad rep in the West precisely because of all these bad movies. There's more to them than just masks, sneaking around stealing stuff whilst killing people mercilessly.

Oh gosh yes, Vijay Amritraj, the Indian Tennis Player, who made me sad when he was shot in Octopussy. He was Q's mate!

Aerobics, knives and a don't try this at home attitude!
    Ninja 3 is the Exorcist-ripoff demon-breakdancing one!
