    Hi All

1st off thanks for all your advice over the last few weeks on the options with my sky and free to air set-up.

However I am now back asking a question on behalf of my parents in law as they are looking to get a free to air system and want some advice on the lidl system available this week or other options around that price.
    http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20100617.p.Satellite_System

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Tommy

This system works perfectly well. It's good value for the money.

Also, it is an 80cm dish, so it is large enough to receive a signal from a second satellite - but you would need to use a second LNB.

B&Q have a HD system for sale. I think it's about €70 or so. Dunno anyone who has one.

Dont waste your money on a Lidl/Aldi satellite system the dish components are poorly made and the back bracket on the 80cm dish that lidl sell is made of plastic there are a lot better made systems on the market today for around the same price http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055898486

Personally, I think an offical Freesat or even a Sky Box with or without FTV card teamed up with a zone two dish is a better option. They'll have an EPG and the channel list will update automatically. The price may be more but you're getting a better quality product and user experience.

They are aware there is no RTE etc ?

Lidl dish is not great and is very ugly.

The Lidl sat box is fine but is FTA rather than freesat which means you don't have a proper channel guide and you occasionally have to retune some channels, which requires some knowledge that you can get from this site. Its not rocket science by any means but some people would find it annoying.

For normal "sky" dishes this guy on ebay is very reliable and delivers quickly.

Probably worth getting the quad LNB as the postage cost is the same.

A freesat box will cost from 50 pounds upward on amazon. Suggest you read some reviews and keep away from the grundig and goodmans brands.

I just checked the LNB of the system I bought in Lidl and the plastic cap on the front of the LNB has crumbled like eggshell. It has been there for about 3 years but I expected it to last longer. Gives me an excuse to put on a Quad LNB now...lol

    Hi Jobyrne,

I have a sky box and satellite on my roof and I got rid of the Sky subscription about 3 weeks ago. I only get FTA channels such as the BBC and UTV and I was wondering have you any suggestions as to what sort of work I could carried out by an installer to get RTE, tv3 ETC.

There is a place in Mullingar that sells NEW 60cm Sky (Raven) dish's inc a single LNB for €25.

They do a lot of sky installs in the county, as they have about 6-10 vans in the area

Finlays are the official Sky installation agents for Ireland. They are based in Mullingar. Any connection with the shop you mention above, I wonder?

just google FTA or then again lookup freesat.co.uk and it gives you the bulk of them

trying to tune in the lidl satellite system to astra 28.2 have tuned loads of foreign channels and plenty of ppv channels but cant get any of the english channels bbc1 itv etc on these channels its saying no signal have dish pointing same as sky dish next door need help

B&Q have a HD system for sale. I think it's about €70 or so. Dunno anyone who has one.
The B&Q HD box can also record the channel your watching onto USB and Time shift.

Why to avoid the lidl SD-box

1.Not HD: Buying a SD box now is a waste of money, even if you don't have a HD TV you can still watch the HD channels, BBC-HD often has programmes on that are not on the SD-channels.

2.Remote control: Those Lidl sat boxes have an annoying problem with the remote control, pressing a button sometimes does the function of the last button pressed, so if you press down channel then up channel it goes down another channel.

3.EPG: Does not update or can have a few hours ago EPG data up. Sometimes the EPG time gets messed up saying programme 1 ends at say 12 but programme 2 starts at 11.

Recomend the B&Q HD FTA box
    >HD
    >cheap
    >USB record
    but;
    1. it's not "Freesat"
    2. when channels move Transponders or change setting you have to rescan that Transponder only, this removes all channels from that Transponder from the channel list and puts all channels from that Transponer at the end of the channel list. If you do a full scan it over writes the channel order ie. you have to manually move each channel back to say 1=BBC1 2=BBC2.

So best thing for user-friendly is a freesat box

Agree with the above and if you use the sky box version, its easy to add ,magic eyes in other rooms etc. Very easy to use also, compared to those LIDL/ALDI jobs which can be tricky to use.

Sounds like you are pointing at Astra 19.2e and not 28.2e. Your dish needs to be turned slightly.

Hi, I have had the Lidl satellite kit for two years now and I would recommend that you bore a hole in front of the screw of the plastic lnb holder and put in a slightly longer screw with a nut on the end of it and tighten it with a spanner. As there is only one short screw holding the lnb arm in place it will move in the wind and will also move the lnb itself out of the skew angle. Check your skew angle and turn the lnb to the left as it can add an extra five percent to the signal quality. Since I have altered the lnb arm four months ago I haven't had any picture breakup in heavy rain or windy weather. Correct alignment is essential when viewing in poor weather. :) I haven't had any problems with either the SL65 receiver or the remote control yet.
