Openfiler or other NAS/SAN

I've inherited a Windows domain in work and although functionally it's fine, I am looking to expand the networked storage options (we have a couple of apps which are networked and use quite a lot of data each).

I installed Openfiler on a spare desktop we had today and it joined the domain fine to read share permissions and stuff from the domain controller so in that respect I'm very happy with it.

Has anyone any experience using this or any other File server solution that is preferably free? The main concern is that I plan to build the file server myself and while the case I plan to use will hold 10 hot swap drives(along with 3 internal system drive slots), I would see us only using 3 or 4 in RAID 5 to start with for budget reasons and then expand the array as and when we need to so as such I would like to be aware of what I'm getting myself in for when the time comes to expand the array.

Hopefully some of you guys have some experience with Openfiler as I'm a complete novice with linux based systems and it's Web based GUI is brilliant for me as a result!
