Need some advice buying first car...

Hi so my situation is this,

i'm 22 (male), had my provisional for the last 3 years nearly but have only done 5 lessons 2 years ago...i'm hoping to get a car and full license this summer and am looking for some advice.
My budget is about 2k-2.5k and from looking at insurance prices i'd be willing to go up to a 1.4L engine

I've picked out a few cars i'm interested in (astra, golf, focus) and have found a few bargains under 2k with decent mileage...is it worth checking out these bargains? Or is there a reason they're this cheap and move on and look at generally cheaper cars? (polos, fiesta etc.)

We have a '98 Ford Escort 1.8 TD at home that my dad never got rid of when he upgraded a 2 years ago. Currently has no tax or NCT, and is in need of a service. Is it worth trying to trade this in with a dealer for even €300/400 off a car, or just sell it for scrap? Would a dealer even take it?

    thanks in advance
