    Check your Software Update.
The 10.6.4 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It includes Safari 5 and general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

    - resolve an issue that causes the keyboard or trackpad to become unresponsive
    - resolve an issue that may prevent some Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications from opening
    - address issues copying, renaming, or deleting files on SMB file servers
    - improve reliability of VPN connections
    - resolve a playback issue in DVD Player when using Good Quality deinterlacing
    - resolve an issue editing photos with iPhoto or Aperture in full screen view
    - improve compatibility with some braille displays

I'll leave it for a few weeks, 10.6.3 reintroduced the sleepy keyboard for me. After a period of idleness if I start typing the first key press or two isn't picked up. It doesn't happen in the terminal or Parallels/VMware and it annoys the sh!t out of me at times.

Edit: Just been checking the Apple site and there is a specific update for the new Mac mini, call me paranoid but the fact that these 'fixes' are not part of the 10.6.4 update suggests to me that it has been rushed. Usually if there is new hardware it is supported by the coinciding update, I don't remember a precedent of a vanilla update and a custom update for new hardware. Also there isn't a Snow Leopard Server update available yet, better off waiting for v1.1 of the update.

I disabled Growl a long while ago.

Can someone give me examples of where it's useful again?

Yeah, after using it for years, I disabled Growl a while ago as well. I still use CoverSutra with iTunes which provides Growl-like notifications of track changes, but other than that I have no need for alerts popping up on my screen.

I suppose Growl can be useful for some things, but it can also quickly become an annoyance with others. It's in major need of an update as well.

Tbh I think Apple have the right idea about notifications in OS X.

I think growl is fantastic, notifies when mails come in, when a build is failing, when RSS feeds have picked up a download, when the downloads have complete, when the status of a delivery has changed, when a certain person has come online...etc, etc That's a small example of how I use it

I find Growl useful for IM notifications, contacts singing in etc on a Mac Mini which I use as a media center - since I'm in Plex on it most of the time, it's pretty useful to get the notifications overlayed while a video is playing, then I can switch to my MacBook if I want/need to talk to the person in question...

Growls best use is for Mail, definitely. I have my icon bar hidden and half the time whenever I get a new email the icon doesn't bounce into view, so GrowlMail is an extremely handy way of alerting you of a new email while also giving you a little preview of it.

I also use it for Adium, iTunes and Firefox notices like completed downloads. I used it for Twitter as well until I discovered Tweetdeck, so yeah it still has lots of good uses.

Haven't installed it yet. Was a little put off by this so will wait another while.

I haven't installed the last update after the problems I had with it. Tried to install it and i couldn't reboot my Mac again. Had to do an erase and install to fix it. Luckily I had time machine turned on all the time.

I won't be trying this update anytime soon.

installed it - nothing new as per usual.

Safari crashes less - but that was a separate update i think.

I noticed Steam gave a notification that nVidia cards will function even worse now (than they already do compared to Bootcamp).

Took the plunge. Installed OK - haven't spotted any issues to date :)

Switched back to safari 5 to give it a go, one thing bugging me. when you highlight a word or phrase and "right click" and select "search google" it does so in the same tab - is there a way to get it to open a new tab to search? looked in settings but did not see anything.

    Cheers.

Hold the command key as you click.

Hold the command key as you click.

Sweet! never thought of even trying that as a work around - cheers! still think it should be the default behaviour like in chrome, but this will do!:)

Safari is bloody awful. Constantly freezing/Spinning beach ball. Back to Firefox.

I haven't had any spinning beach balls with Safari 5 so far. And I've pretty much moved permanently back to it from Chrome.

    Are you using any add-ons?

Chrome is now my fulltime browser - impressive considering before safari 5 I was all about safari and with the new features it should have become even more cemented but it is way way too buggy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,542 ✭✭✭eoferrall

I'm the same as sad professor, moved back from chrome to safari 5, no spinning balls and no bugs or crashes to report.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭dubmick

Chrome all the way for me, took a while to move from Firefox though.
