Hi all, have a friend who is hoping to return to college in September '10, ok, he finished the last phase in college just before xmas and is now a qualified mechanic, but due to lack of jobs is hoping to go back to LIT in Sept to do above course...So now my question is what grant or social welfare would he be entitled to..he was working from Dec and is finishing at end of month, so where would he get the best advice? He is 23 and has never claimed before..

    Thanks for any advice guys..:D

Moved this to student finances as its better suited.

i was in a similiar position myself, i finished work in janurary the year i was going to college.

I made an appointment with the facilitator in the social welfare office, and spoke to him.

He basically told me i would be elligable for the back to education allowance, which is the same amount as the job seekers allowance. I was also entitled to keep my medical card and also apply for rent allowance.

However, if he applys for btea, and is accepted, he will not be entited to apply for the grant scheme from the local county council.

If you weigh both options against each other, the back to education allowance is far more beneficial, as you get the fee's paid, you can have the medical card and rent allowance, and you also get to sign back on job seekers allowance during the summer when not in college.

Plus its paid weekly, while the grant can take months to be approved, and is only paid monthly and not during the summer.

Hey Royal, thanks for the reply and apologies for wrong placement!

Ok story as of this morning is he's very unhappy in his job and wants to leave sooner rather than later but am i right in saying he could be penalised for leaving the job for a college? He wants to do the college course as obviously he's a qualified mechie but wants to further his career by doing this course, what would the consequences if any be?

There is so much confusing stuff on the net re this but im tending to agree with you re the BTEA as opposed to the grant..

Cheers if you have any more info..:)
