Quick question for you all - how much should I be paying for a TB including water pump for the above? Does it need anything else at the same time, tensioners, bearings etc? Car's in Kimmage, any local recommendations would be great. Thanks!

I have rang a few garages getting quotes for the same, €399 incl vat seems to be the going rate from main dealers here in the west. Cant imagine it being any different in the east

Change the pulleys as well as VW used rubbish plastics ones.

As for price I don't know

Belt, tensioners and water pump. Had one done at main dealers on a similar engine for 330 as far as I remember. Should be able to shave a bit off that with an independent

Thanks guys. A friend has their car booked in to Jetstar in Dún Laoghaire tomorrow to have the job done - they were quoted €500. I presume that this includes the water pump etc, but the price still seems OTT. EPM, can you remember where? Did that price include VAT?

Just had a look there. Came to 530 including a full service but it was done at a seat dealer in cork. Was on the 1.6 lump but can't imagine a price difference there. €500 is way over the top for three hours work and a kit.

Since then I have had work done by a Skoda dealer. Labour rates are a lot lower - cheaper than some independents I've tried for prices

Wasn't there a place in Belfast doing VAG servicing for peanuts?

It depends on your engine model. Generally a kit will set you back around 160-300euro depending on engine model. Try a get a "Gates" Timing Belt kit. That's the one VW use/recommend.

The 1.4 Golf has 2 belts and 2 tensoiners so the kit would be more expensive than the 1.6.

    Micksgarage

    €500 seems steep alright.

I got a quote for a service there recently. It was more expensive than a main dealer. Only by €10 to be honest, but sure why would one bother going to an independent if it's more expensive than the main dealer. Not that all dealers do the best job etc. I find their pricing way OTT for an independent.

Since the car is in Kimmage try Treacy's Auto Centre. They do a load of work for us in work, and also for at least one other leasing company.

We usually speak to Damien but he's away at the moment, but I'm sure someone will price it up for you.

you should get that done for 350 all in;)

Thanks again to everyone. I got Jetstar down to €425 including a coolant change. Treacy's did say they'd do it for around €350 excluding the coolant change, but Jetstar can do it today, which suits the owner a lot better.
