Im doing a service on my car for the first time tomorrow. I think i have everything. Im just unsure how i use a torque strap when removing the oil filter..is it simply a case of wrap it round and use brute force to unscrew? When im putting the new filter on is it ok just to hand screw it on?

Try it with your hand first, you could be surprised!

They're supposed to be hand tightened, I think, but make sure you lube the rubber seal with some oil before sticking it on!

BTW, Hand tight means screw the filter on until the seal contacts then thighten with a three quarter turn*, it does not mean as tight as you can get it by hand.

    * check fitting instructions printed on filter casing.

I did mine the other day & brute force was required. The filter casing was completely tightened down onto the seating area, at least a full rotation too tight. Thats main dealers for ya.
