Jesus statue struck by lightning

My favourite story of the year so far...

    http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/06/15/jesus-statue-struck-by-lightning/

If you've ever driven between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, on I-75 then you probably saw the six-story King of Kings statue featuring Jesus coming out of a lake with hands raised in front of the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio.
Monday night the statue was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning.
    c1main.jesusbefore.jpg
CNN iReporters in the area are all over this story.
The gleaming white statue was unmissable, even speeding down the interstate.
Monroe fire chief Mark Neu told the CNN Belief Blog he's never seen anything like the fire in his 32 years as chief.
He said the 62-foot statue had a steel frame and was wrapped in Styrofoam and covered with a fiberglass coating to protect it. At 11:16 last night, the fire department got the call the statue had been hit by lighting and was on fire.
"It spread from the statue to the amphitheater," he said. "There was heavy damage to the amphitheater where the stature backed up to. It was a fast-moving fire. We’re looking at $700,000 worth of damage."
The chief has spoken with church officials, who have gotten calls about the statue today from as far away as China.
"I know the membership of the Solid Rock Church was devastated by the fire and have every intention of putting the statue and the amphitheater back as is was," Neu said. "They said they plan on rebuilding immediately and moving forward."
Neu said no one was injured in the blaze.
The statue made cameos in loads of Ohioans' snapshots and even made it into the documentary "Jesus Camp."

I really want to hear how the faithful explain this one, it's going to take some serious intellectual acrobatics to square an act of god destoying a statue of his supposed son. Was he simply aiming for the local free-thinkers club and missed?

Addition..... Actually, they are already talking about 'graven images' being destroyed. Funny that the biggest one of them all, Cristo Rei in Rio has been there for decades, untouched and un-zapped.

I reckon most will explain it the same way that I would; that lightning tends to strike the highest object in the area (or something like that). They only bring god, miracles, divine intervention etc. into the mix when something goes their way.

IT'S A MIRACLE that no one was hurt. Proof of god right there. You just try and prove it's not!

Ugh,I'm not bothered about the whole religious aspect, but that statue looked like an eyesore anyway.

That's what happens when you blaspheme the almighty Zeus.

Presumably it was built by the wrong kind of Christians.

So, what you're saying is that if I continue to burn away at Christian dogma with my fiery rhetoric I will eventually reveal the mangled and shoddy framework underneath it all?

    I'm an exegete!

How can anyone fashion a statue of someone who has no visual record?
Jesus was dark-skinned, probably was gernetically related to Yasser Arafat and lived in the days before hairdressers.
Like the other folk of the time, hair was cut with a knife, but more commonly was singed off using burning coal or wood.

Yet these folk actually believe he looked European. Christianity causes mass delusion indeed.

I blame the commie-nazis that are trying to destroy america through health care reform.

lightning hates our freedom you know.

Give it a few days. It might be back.

The flameout has inevitably prompted wailing and gnashing of teeth as locals ponder why a bolt of electricity would choose to light on a six-storey high structure with a steel skeleton standing in a predominantly flat area
Shamelessly stolen from Joe Fay on El Reg but it made me giggle.

If theists can square a loving god with babies born with aids into a life of disease, malnutrition and death before the age of 3 then explaining why their mecha-jesus burned down will be a cake walk.

Apparently, there was a porn shop across the street that remained resolutely unlightning-ed.

Not quite true -- Jesus had his eyebrows singed during a major zap in 2008, since when the Lord's earthrods have been upgraded.

If the statue had been in Ballinspittle, I suppose it could have just jumped out of the way.

I tell you people, the flying spaghetti monster is bringing down his wrath upon the Earth because the humans are worshiping false idols like this Jesus figure people have been talking about for the last 2,000 years.

Maybe it's just me but this looks like some sort of giant insect. I think the true nature of the statue has thus been revealed.

Nice to see a graven image getting zapped. Now we need to pray for God to do a similar thing to all the idolatrous statues here in Ireland. There's a particularly revolting statue of Mary in Castlebellingham that is just asking for a lightning bolt or two.

I guess if you build anything that is likely to get struck by lightening then you're a bit of a moron if you don't take adequate protection...even the Vatican has lightening rods...

    God asks us;

...not to be morons! and take things for granted, there is no other message in this...

    Amen! :)

Turns out mary is pissed off big time about Zeus hitting her little boy.
