Getting back on the saddle...

After many many years off a bike I'm looking to start cycling again... I'm currently looking at getting a bike through the bike to work scheme and I've just moved house so am now within cycling distance for work...

I'm just looking for advice on what to look out for. What kind of bike might be best, retailers etc...

I used to cycle a lot when I was younger. All MTB, last time I did that was about 12 yrs ago... I'm leaning towards a hybrid bike as I don't think I'd feel comfortable on a road bike... Can anyone recommend a brand of bike or what to look out for when choosing a bike.

This is the scheme the job are using and the selection of shops... Can anyone recommend a good retailer?

I would try a road bike before ruling it out....

I have always cycled MTBs, as I already had a half decent entry level mtb I decided to take a chance and pick up a single speed road bike a specialized langster on the cycle to work scheme

I am converted to road bikes.

So much better for cycling on the road.

I also managed to convince my Da a while back to look at a road bike and he picked up a nice specialized sectuer road bike (meant for nice relaxed long distance riding) which he loves.

You should consider a road bike: its the same advice the lads on here give every post and they a right.:pac:

Drop bars are very easy to get used to and they allow you to change hand position a lot while riding which is more comfortable on your hands and wrists over a long ride. I am finding my cycle in to work much more comfortable.

Having cycled long distance on my old MTB, 50km or so, on the road to go do a tiny bit of off road cycling, I can safely it's torture. Grinding away on an MTB while everyone else glides past on a road bike is not fun.

My next MTB equipment I will be getting is a drivers license and a car that can take a bike in the back!

There is a huge variety of road bikes: bikes with a regular flat bar that look like a hybrid with very skinny wheels!, road bikes for racing, road bikes for long distance that would be more relaxed in setup than a pure road bike, you also have cyclecross bikes which are for riding off road dirt tracks which make great commuting bikes as they take thicker tires and racks and mud guards easy. You even have single speed bikes if you like to torture yourself :D.

Examine all your options but don't rule out road bikes just yet.....

If you wanted a more traditional hybrid, I would look at a Cannondale bad boy as they are pimp personally. They have on display in cycleways on Parnell street downstairs, you really have to see them in person.

Any of the above bikes you have looked at will suit you for commuting and will be much faster and more pleasant to cycle than a traditional chunky tire MTB.

People at work have had Specalized Sirus, Trek 7.5 FX and Trek 7.3 FX bikes and they have all been very happy with them for commuting.
The Giant Rapid are meant to be very nice as well.

Tbh all you can do is have a look round a few shops, hop up on a few and see which bike will suit you the most.
You have a good idea of what you want which is half the battle :).

    Wheelworx Fonthill
Unit 48B, Fonthill Retail Park, Lucan, Dublin 22
    01 4577100
Trek, Specialized, Dolan, Giant Argon 18, Sabbath, Kuota, Kestrel, Storck

Massive shop and TONS of bikes. Probably the best store in the Dublin area for choice.
