small cheap media player - downmixing sound

I want a small media player, capable of playing avi/mkv files (xvid and h264 mainly) on a TV over hdmi.

My only question is sound, some files have ac3, some dts 5.1(rarer) and AAC 6.1 (even more rare). I know that the player will multiplex the sound over hdmi (will any plain old TVs handle those formats?), I really don't have the space/inclination for a separate amp and using an optical cable.

So my question is do any of the small cheap media players out there downmix those codecs on the fly and send them to the TV? I know I could mess around with conversion utilities on a PC, that's not too appealing either?

So basically has anyone got one of these players, plugged directly into a TV with hdmi (no amp) and can play files with AC3, DTS or AAC soundtracks, if so which player and TV combo have you got?

Any of the Popcorn Hour models do DTS, AAC downmixing.
