Is it just me or is dialogue getting harder to discern, even on dedicated 5.1 very expensive equipment?
I do not notice any change in audio output ,for example when I go from Normal to Dolby Surround on the Sky menu, allowing for the difference between Dolby,Pro logic and 5.1 THX etc.
Am I just going slowly hard of hearing ,are actors mumbling more,or should I just listen to the ads, where low audio doesnt seem to be a problem.

I have to agree with you on this one I have been wondering myself is there something wrong with my hearing, I have to be more alert now when I listen to conversation on the tv. I was watching Big Brother last night and for the life of me I could not understand half of what they were saying its a right pain.

Whatever about the quality of sound, I often have issues with sound out of sync on all this new fancy digital kit. It's very annoying!

You can delay the audio if you're using a Sky HD box. I'm not familiar with other boxes but I'd imagine a similar facility is available.

I have noticed that ads seem to be a few dB louder than the programme content on some channels. I use a 10 year old Sony 5.1 amp linked from Sky HD box by optical cable and I have no problems with the audio mix. n some channels like BBC SD, RTE, TV3, etc I do find myself increasing the centre channel sometimes. My display doesn't have speakers so I can't comment on what the audio is like without an external amplifier.

    yea crosstownk
I have the facility to delay the audio on my TV, but delay it by how much? sometimes it's 10 or 20ms out, sometimes it's nearing the 1000ms. And it can be out by a certain length on one chan/transponder/system, and out by another amount on another.

You're right about the dam ads being louder. It feeds into my fantasy though to develope an algorithmn that can detect ad breaks and take action (pause recording, scan other channels and then return when ad sover ..... etc). Maybe this difference in db could be a detectable trigger :)

There is a program for editing mpeg/vob files called videoredo which detects ads and marks them for removal. I'm almost certain that it is done by finding areas in the audio stream with high dynamic range compression i.e. ads.

Although the technology exists - and it is great don't get me wrong, its not really that useful unless you record and transfer to a pc or external disc or if you have a pc based dvr/htpc

there are already tons of algorithms that will remove the volume increase for advertisements. in fact a lot of tvs have one already

I agree with you on this one, my partner isn't a native english speaker and she uses subtitles if they are available, when she is away I was finding myself turning on the subtitles so I could catch what people were saying, Saul Tigh in BSG was very difficult without the subtitles.
