Whats are 'Referrals' referring to in user profiles?

On the Statistics tab of a user profile in the General Information section there is a number for 'referrals'. Can someone enlighten me as to what they are about?

When a person joins there is a box saying 'Who referred you'.

If a person from boards or adverts told you about the site you put there username in and they get a referral.

To be honest I don't know if there is any benefit if you refer somebody, but it adds more people to the site you know
