    You're a bit late!
Forget job websites, go around to all the supermarkets and the likes handing in cv's. That's the only way. Sitting at home on a computer doesn't show any initiative!

And thats what i get for asking for a little advice!!

For the record, I spent my summer 2 years ago doing exactly what you said..Printed off a total of 70 CV's and spent hours and hour travelling around to various shops/businesses and only got 1 single call-back..Luckily i got the job!! Must've been my great initiative that helped me get it!!

Was advised not to do the same this year..Was told to focus on places that are actually advertising for staff, hence search websites and what-not...

Sorry if using my common-sense is a crime in your eyes.

Im in the same boat, job websites are not worth the effort, the only call backs i got where for the scam face to face marketing companies.

Even going around shops isnt working for me, alot of places wouldnt take my CV it even if I had paid them to, really knocks your confidence when everywhere you go is rejecting you.

Ask your family is best option, someone somewhere will surely give you a trial atleast.

There's no need for the drama queenery, Alanstrainor's advice is spot on. Why would a supermarket bother paying to advertise online when they have people walking in with CVs all the time?
And FYI, you are about 2 months too late for looking for summer work.

Whats with all this pessimism?! Oh and FYI, i don't believe its too late. For the last 2 summers i had 2 do the LC so it was at least the end f June by the time i was available for a job..But i got a job for both those summer, without a problem!!
I finished much earlier this summer and i'm having difficulty getting a job. Would u mind explaining that to me?
Have you ever heard the saying that ''if you don't have something helpful to say to someone, don't bother saying anything at all!''

When you are older and a little more mature maybe you will realise that unfortunately, sometimes people don't tell us exactly what we want to hear.

Helpful advice- ok- first off, get someone to proof-read your spelling and grammar on your CV.

Ok, so your choosing to give me yet another piece of unhelful advice..Along with that i don't understand how that statement answers my question?!

I'll treat that second remark with the contempt that it deserves..I dont mean to be abrupt but what evidence do you have that i can't spell or use grammer correctly?? Your remark has absolutely no basis-Doing this is common technique among individuals who know that they have absolutely no argument but yet, they continue to try to beat the other side down, by coming up with pathethic piece of information!

Oh and btw, i'll have you know that i am currently a student of law. I wonder how i managed to gain a place in law school if according to you, i cannot spell or use grammer correctly?!

If you're so insistent on defending your spelling and grammar, at least ensure they're correct first!

As for why you were able to find jobs last summer and the summer previous? Well, there were more jobs back then.

This has all degenerated very quickly!

Bottom line is, there are jobs around that will take you on, it takes initiative, effort and ahem, bouncebackability.

It's a good start to ask for advice, but I advise you to take what's said on the boards with a pinch of salt, that is don't take things so personally.

People have pops at each other all of the time, so bear in mind, people will be saying no to you in your jobsearch all of the time. Try to accept that as part of the process and don't let that get to you or deter you either.

Being out of work can be stressful, perhaps being under serious pressure financially or other aspects we just don't know about can undermine people's confidence and create a defensive attitude.

I would expect some leeway to be given, so I say "physician, heal thyself" to some of the other posters on this thread.

    Best of luck op.

Yeah, but your regular summer jobs- shops, bars, restaurants etc, don't generally advertise online because they get so many people coming in with CVs every week anyway. A lot of them don't advertise full stop.

Yeah, was the same when I was in college- and that was during the mega-boom years. I used to start applying to places in March.

I've been handing out CV's and applications since mid April for some kind of summer work and have only started getting interviews in the last few days. It really is very tough out there at the minute and seems to be a matter of whether or not you get lucky. At this stage OP, I would advise just going out and leaving in your CV to anywhere that will accept it - a lot of places wouldn't even take mine off me when I tried. Also keep an eye on local newspapers etc. It's all you can do now, as most posters said you are a little bit late. Try to get going before the Leaving Certs all finish anyway. Best of luck!

Sorry to dissappoint you Magenta but i don't attend Griffith College. I earned my place in one of the most sought-after State Universitites.
So no, i'm not ''buying'' my law degree...

Oh and for the record, a very close family member of mine died tragically the first time i sat the leaving cert-missed a lot of exams/orals etc throughout the year and had decided well before the LC started that i would do the whole year again. Maybe you should think before you talk Magenta!

To add to that, i got a great deal more than 185 points each time i sat the LC.

I don't know why i bother. I just know that every word i say is going to be used against me anyway...

Go to primarks website, then recruitment, then pick the area and pick the job title. Retail operative is the sales assistant one, they hired around 50 people in Mary St. in Dublin already since the end of May.

Oh and i also heard NEXT and Pamela Scott are hiring. You can apply on their websites

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,514 ✭✭✭Dermo

A lot of shops will have a notice on the door if they are currently looking for staff. HMV have an excellent example of this. If you walk around you might be able to find a place but as has been said already most places have filled up for summer work by now.

It's probably too late now, but for next year when you are in college apply for summer jobs related to your course in February. Don't just settle for a summer job, the experience you get from a "real" job will be worth much more in the long run.

Thanks so much. Wish i could thank you twice!!

Anyone else having problems with the Pennys website?? I just got a page with 3 drop-downs and a map in the middle..Can't seem to get passed that stage...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭robbie_998

The thing about NEXT is that its only a one day event and its only good to pay you about €50.... also can't apply on their website... hand in a CV there !

yeah penny's took on quite a few people there recently (including one of my friends) but that was last month... still worth a try.

HMV - apply online only too.
