Washing machine not spinning

The washing machine is not spinning. I have tried lots of different programmes and none of them are spinning. The clothes are wringing. Its as if the water is not draining fully also the clothes are hot when the cycle finishes. I also noticed the presence of grit on the clothes like sand. This should not have happened as it is only a few bed sheets so nothing 'dirty' has gone in to the wash. Any suggestions?

sounds like the water pump is blocked . there should be filter that you can open at the bottom of the washing machine. usualy a one cent coin or a hair clip stuck in it in our house

I have taken the filter out and there was nothing of any significance in it. It is still not spinning or draining. I have also pulled the machine out slightly in case the out let pipe was kinked. No luck. Not sure what to do next.

a fiver says a sock is cought in the pump. Take the washing machine out back and turn it up side down....Be caful...water will come out.

Then disconnect the hose from the pump.

You can post the fiver to me :)

joey is usually spot on but just in case
some machines have a wash and hold button to prevent clothes creasing when left lying in the machine all day.it keeps the clothes in water.is this pressed?
