    Hi there

Hopefully someone out there can help us .... my husband (SE carpenter) just signed on last week and was told that with my salary not to expect much on the dole !!!

Now my job is not very secure and actually there is an option to take redundancy which we are seriously thinking about. I would love to take this opportunity to retrain and am thinking about doing a HDip in Education

My query is what would we be entitled to on a weekly basis - we have 2 small children, - would i be entitled to a back to education grant?

Also I 'used up' most of my stamps last year as i was on a 3 day week - would that make any difference?

Thanks in advance for your help

Sorry to hear about your husband....in regards to what you will get thats tricky as we dont know what you earn however it will be means tested on your salary
if you decide to take redundancy you wont be able to get the dole just yet as you will have your redundancy money
as for back to education grant im not sure if you will be entitled to it as in my situation i went to college when i finished school and years later decided to go back and retrain in accountancy i was unemployed at the time and applied for back to education grant but they refused as i already had an education even thought the first time i was in college i worked two jobs to pay for it and never received a penny for the state up to that point i hope things have changed now but its something that i dont think anyone can answer apart from the grants people
as you have a job it may not be the best time to let it go what with the current economic climate but best of luck with what you decide just make sure you think about all the options :)

I am in a similar situation, as soon as I supplied my payslip, my OH payment was assessed as €34.50 per week. My pay is just about the industrial wage.

That's not true - I got the dole immediately when I was made redundant. It depends on the individual situation but advice like that is unhelpful

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

OK if both of you received the top rate of JSA - It would be 196 euro each plus 29 euro for each qualified child - I don't think the BTEA is really an option unless you wait til September 2011 to return to education

You have to be on Jobseekers for 6 months before you apply for Back to Education so it would be Sept 2011 before you could start your course.

As you've used you stamps you would have to be means tested.

And in a perfect world you would be entitled to:

    Your husband €196.00 (full payment)
    You €130.10 (qualified adult rate)
    2 Children €59.60 (dependent children)
    TOTAL €384.70

how is that unhelpful???? this is what happened to many people i know they went down signed on and got nothing as they had received a redundancy payout so it depends on individual situations

    OP
You can sign on immediately when made redundant. If it was compulsary. Its different if its voluntary AFAIK. You would be waiting up to 9 weeks for payment. Well that was the case 18 months ago.

    You made an untrue statement

how is it untrue if it happened to a two friends of mine they went down signed all the forms everything else but due to the fact they had the redundancy money in their bank account they where able to fund themselves and where refused welfare....instead of picking and choosing what you like out of a statement read it in the context it was written

You can have €20,000 in the bank and you can still be entitled to Jobseekers.

If you took voluntary redundancy you may lose the first few weeks dole. I know this is the case if you leave your job.
