Ok so as title says I am looking at getting a new car and don't know what to buy.
Originally had heart set on a renault megane around an 03....heard too many horrror stories about electrics and costs from everywhere I looked...so decided stay away-

So am looking at car from around 03 (give or take), around 1.4- 1.6ish, decent milleage, 5 door and maybe hatchback but again flexible here-

I am thinking maybe a golf, focus or something now but I am not a big car buff, and am lost after havinf been set on golf...been doing searches etc: but doesnt seem be helping me still bit lost! Thanks for any advice!

Have you driven a good selection of possible cars? If not, i'd start there.

OP I own a Golf, and although it is a very fine car.......you should probably be aiming a little higher if you have 3-4 million euros to spend. :D

OP I've had a Golf and it was hell. Even good ones can be expensive to maintain. (I know other people love them but just be aware, its second hand cheap car) Head gaskets can give trouble on the 1.4's and 1.6's can run rough in my experience

I know its boring but if economy motoring is your thing and your not familiar with cars you could do worse than an Avensis for that sort of money or a focus for the handling

You will probably pick up a decent 04/05 Ford Fiesta for that sort of money if don't want something bigger.

I recently bought a 01 Passat 130Bhp (TDI) with just under 120k miles. Car is in fantastic condition and drives great. Alot of the work needed was already done like timing belt, water pump, turbo, CV joins, suspension arms etc. All things that will go and need replacing. Had it now for a couple of weeks and love it.

From my experience when looking the golfs are over priced compared to other cars with the same engine. I gave 3.5k for the passat and recon it was worth a bit more than I paid.

Im thinking either a Lotus Elise or Honda S2000. Dont buy a Golf, its wrong wheel drive and handles like a pig.

So you reckon you'd sell it for over €3500 ;)

Yes I probably would I know people who have bought the same spec car for more money. Probably wouldn't make a whole lot but at least another 400-500.

Nah. I'd definitely recommend an e30 BMW 3 series. That is not a bad choice and could handle some decent upgrades. I would recommend starting with a chip, catback exhaust and a cold air intake. Later he could add a turbo kit. He'll also need sticky tires and a second set of wheels for track days.
