Carer's allowance re. elderly parent

Am wondering what the criteria is for carer's allowance when you are taking care of an elderly parent. I provide assistance to my elderly mother, in her 80s, who is otherwise in relatively good health but is on medication. She has also been hospitalised a few times in the past few years. Basically I clean, cook, shop and pay-bills etc. Her mobility is an issue but she has all her mental faculties. Has anyone on here applied for a carer's allowance in such circumstances? Or does the state only provide this 'benefit' when your relative is so far gone as to be practically on their last legs and require everything to be done for them?

One of my friends minds his mother and get the carers allowence. Shes about the same age as your mother and also has mobility issues. Rind social welfare or look up their website, it might have the criteria listed. If not a phone call to social welfare should supply the info you need.
