If it's a sky+ box it's probably set to record live tv so you can rewind the programe you're watching. I disabled this on mine (before I got rid of them) and the noise which is probably the hard drive as said above stopped.

That seems pointless. It's one of the best features of Sky+ !!

OP - we need more details.

if you turn it to standby the noise will stop

this is really only a solution if the issue is that you have a box in the bedroom which can disturb sleep

however, if you record soemthing in the middle of the night it will make noise, even if turned to standby

Also, if you have Anytime enabled on a Sky+ / Sky+ HD box (it is by default) it will auto record programmes overnight.

I'm assuming you have an active Sky subscription and that your house is not made of paper.

In this case, you should call Sky customer services. Explain to them that you think the box is faulty due to the noise issues. You could say you are concerned that it may overheat as the problems only start after it has been on for two hours.

They may send an engineer for free. If they say an engineer will cost money, say no thanks - and then ask to be transferred to the cancellations department. Explain to them why you would like to cancel - chances are they will send an engineer for no cost.
