ESB deposit

We set up an ESB account back in 2004 and paid the 150 Euro deposit. Since we have moved 4 times. Recently we closed our ESB account to move to another provider. We had an outstanding bill which we paid all but the remaining 150 Euro as we were owed it for our deposit. However ESB is now demanding that we pay the 150 Euro and has forwarded the debt onto a debt collector who is threatening court. When ESB originally demanded the 150 Euro we phoned them to explain that the remaining amount was what they owed us for our deposit. They asked for the bond from when we paid the deposit but we have no idea where it is after moving 4 times in 6 years. The deposit was paid in the old ESB shop so we have no other proof we paid it. They maintain that they do not have a record of us paying a deposit - which I find very hard to believe. We asked them under what condition could someone have set up an ESB account without paying a deposit as they were implying that the deposit wasn't paid at all. They told us that the only way you could be connected without a deposit was if you were a homeowner, which we were never. Obviously the deposit was paid therefore we do not owe them anything.

Is there anything that we can do here?

Am not home owner and always managed to avoid paying the deposit, so it is possible.

Unless you have proof that you paid it (which you said you don't), you're in a tough situation.

They say you didn't pay it, you say you did but have no proof, so it's your word against theirs now.

If you had proof it would be open and shut, as you have none as far as they are concerned you could be lieing
