My mazda 323 1.3 petrol has started loosing power at high rpm,

When i am on a motorway doing 120 the rpm is around 4000, then when i put my foot down i can feel a power loss and the rpm starts to drop, it usually only lasts for a second or 2 before i regain power.

I had a look at the engine today and i found that the rubber air tube going from the air filter the engine is cracked and has a small hole, could this be causing the problem ?

    Hears some pics:

I have same my 323 Lx. Gave it full service and replaced the fuel filter at an extra cost of 100 euro.
No differance. Car is only worth a grand don't want to spend more money on it. I had no tear in the air intake was that your problem ?
    Cheers

you could wrap insulating tape around the pipe to fix the leak and then drive the car to see if its any better. either way it does need replacing though.
