Heading there in a few weeks for a week. Staying in Catania but looking for any tips on interesting places to see, things to do outside of Catania too, thanks.

Hi, I was in Sicily a few years ago for about a week. Erice is a trip worth making if you can. It's a beautiful Medieval mountain-top fortresses which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.
Mt. Etna is an obvious 'must'. Be careful though to bring warm clothes with you, even on roasting hot days it can be pretty cold up there. We didn't know this and arrived in shorts and t-shirts. It was too cold to stay out of the car for very long so we just took quick snap shots and dove for cover back to our warm car.
Palermo is a busy spot and well worth a few hours on foot to see.
Catania itself is also really interesting, it's not at all a typical Sicilian or even Italian town. Totally different from any other town in Italy that I've ever seen, and I've seen lots.

Etna has to be done. I wouldn't bother with Palermo though, we spent a week driving around, and we lasted about 3 hours in Palermo. Just another noisy city.

We did Agrigento (Fine for half a day) and from Agrigento we took a day trip to Erice - a medieval mountain top village you take a cable car to. Well worth doing. We went from there to Palermo, and ran from there to Taormina which is just gorgeous. You could spend forever there. From there we went down to Agrigento, and enjoyed hiking around the old temples and spending the day at the beach.

There's loads to see and do, but don't limit yourself to cities. It's worth getting out and seeing some attractions. And the food is incredible, try Caprese salad for starters, and Swordfish for main - even if you don't like fish!

Thanks guys. Definitely planning on seeing Mount Etna and Taormina. Erice sounds great so we'll take a trip out there too, thanks. We won't have a car so we might be a bit limited but hopefully we'll get on okay with public transport/tours.

You shouldn't have a problem with transport. We met a dutch couple in one of our B&Bs and they managed to get from Taormina to Agrigento about 3 hours after we did by car.
