    Hey lads,

This has probably been done to death but..

Im thinking of bringing in a Defender from the UK, much higher spec and better condition than any of the 2nd hand yokes here. It is a 2008 Land Rover Defender passenger.

I plan on getting it converted to commercial once i get it over here. Am i liable for VRT?

    Oh, its €25,000.

By passenger, do you mean it's a 110 station wagon (two rows seats, 5 doors), 90 station wagon, 110 crew cab, 110 Utility or 130 crew cab? If you don't need the seats, just get a standard hard top or truck cab, already commercial, 90 will be 13.5% VRT, 110 will be €50.

Its a 90 SWB but with seats in the back. I plan on converting it into fully commercial once i get it over.

Very easy but easier to buy a Hardtop 90 and they will be cheaper. However, the fold up rear seats in the Puma 90s will be worth a fair bit to someone back in the UK but it may not be straightforward removing them. Also the bulkhead will have been removed. For VRT you would also have to panel the rear side windows and it's neater to actually unbolt and replace the sides with plain van sides. This is assuming it's a proper station wagon and not a plain van someone has bolted some seats in.

I'd seriously look for a 90 hardtop in the spec you want (you can get them with all the same trim as a station wagon) or bring a plain one up to what you want with aftermarket bits. You will pay 13.5% VRT on a 90 commercial.

The VRT rate is the same as the VAT rate? I wonder if I can claim back my on a UK purchase...

if you are registered for vat and if the vehicle is for use in connection with your business when you supply your vat details to the seller in the uk they will deduct the vat amount from the overall price.
