Just as a follow on to the other bad driving and/or roundabout related threads.

The following all relates to Dublin :-)

comng up to the Wellington roundabout from the spawell the two cars in front ofme stopped to yield toteaffic on theroundabout. The landcruiser stopped in the right hand lane, at this point the blonde lady of around 55 - 60 driving a silver fiesta (the model that's just been replaced I think it was) decided to move from being in both lanes to being in the right lane and entered the roundabout indicating right. So I had been coming from a bit further back so went through the roundabout in the left lane . When I'm coming to the exit and positioned more or less in between the landcruiser the woman suddenly decides I'm in the wrong and starts hammering the horn and shouting . So at the next lights I turned and mouthed to her that she was in the wrong lane but she wouldn't look at me then took a left turn without I dicating.

Just after the lights there's another roundabout. It's a small one but has two lanes on and one off. Again the landcruiser goes to the right lane and I go left. I go through the roundabout then start hearing beeping again. The guy in the landcruiser does the same thing as the woman in the fiesta. He was around the same age too.

So peoplecan we all start making a point to leave the rules of the road out on the table at home or call the family in to showthem the roundabout ad when it's on the telly.

I'm starting to really despair .

I'm sorry to anyone Reading this in greenhills/walkinstown that has a middle aged mother in a silver fiesta bt she's an idiot.

I have to agree. I'm only driving about 2 years but roundabouts are getting ridiculous. No indication. Wrong lanes.

The Bray South exit on the N11 is a prime example. Its a sharp sweeping left turn onto a roundabout with 4 exits. It's "technically" a single lane until the road markings re-appear at the enterance to the roundabout. But locally two lanes normally form. The left hand lane is only for the first exit (As per the road markings) to go to Enniskerry / N11 North Bound. The right lane is for all other exits.

In rush hour consistently people belt up the left lane past all the traffic and cut in on the traffic going around the roundabout. Its way too narrow for two lanes of traffic. I've seen more crashes there and its the same car's every single day.

I should really post some pictures...

the walkinstown roundabout - i have yet to see any of our more 'mature' citizens or females successfully get through that without cutting lanes, forgetting to indicate, or just plain stop in the middle of it for no reason

I just avoid it and cut through Ballymount to get to the Long Mile Road.
I'm more than competent in using roundabouts, but I avoid it because if the other people that use it, wrongly.

Haha, partly guessed that chances were high that the thread related to roundabouts when I looked at the title. I think I've seen it all at roundabouts but then I see something even more stupid. The only thing I think I haven't seen yet is somebody driving around one in the wrong direction (which I'm sure I probably will at some time no doubt). Whatever about not indicating, which is bad enough but indicating as if to come off the roundabout only to proceed on past that exit, which I see quite a lot. Lane choice seems to be pick n mix for the very most part, whichever takes your fancy sort thing with no regard for the exit their taking. Another thing that tests my patience which more drivers than not do I reckon is if taking second exit for example approach roundabout on left lane and mid way through roundabout cutting right in to the right hand lane and cutting other drivers up.

Why are people now leaving roundabouts while indicating right ? I'm seeing this now constantly, everyday, nearly everytime I go through a roundabout. Either this or no indication at all. I can't remember when I last saw a driver indicating left to exit a roundabout...

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Between idiots in the wrong lane, not indicating, jumping out in front of you as you pass their entrance to the roundabout, and cutting in front of you as they drive all the way around it in the left lane - roundabouts MUST be one of the biggest causes of accidents.

Given the appaling driving standards in this country, complete with a total lack of courtesy and patience (especially outside Dublin), roundabouts should be abolished completely in favour of proper signalled (where necessary) junctions.

TBH there's a better chance of getting roundabouts scrapped :(

(Before the AGS fanclub arrives - how many times have you sat in a traffic jam while a squad/TC car drives casually past in the opposite direction? I don't buy the "you don't know where that car is off to" argument either - I'm sure if an ambulance happened upon an accident on the road, they'd stop to assist)

I think it's that the OP reckons it's usually the middle-aged/older generation that have issues navigating roundabouts.. though in my experience its a universal failing.

It just happened to be two middle aged people today at the same time.

My experience , with little exception , is that women dont have much of a clue about roudabouts and just drive straight through hopeing for the best and refuse to look at you when you end up driving right at them. They just follow the herd and hope they are doing right. Men tend to know what they are doing wrong but just dont care. They figure they can bully their way around them. You can read the body and facial expressions so easily.

I know an old woman who in her own words"doesent do fifth gear", when I asked her why? she said in my day cars only had 4 gears. Ive no idea what she does at roundabouts cos they werent around in her day either.

Presumably if this roundabout had a double lane entry system it also had a double lane exit system, in which case a car in the right hand lane would have exited in the rightmost lane of the 2nd exit of the roundabout and not come in contact whatsoever with you.

So it's puzzling me, why the beeping? If you stuck to the left lane the whole way around and exited in the left-most lane of the double lane 2nd exit your paths would never have crossed. What are we missing?

Try doing the Ars de Triomphe roundabout guys. After a few laps of that you'll never critcise an irish roundabout again!

Nope, the roundabout only has one lane exits. 2 on and 1 off at each of the 4 sides. It's a perfect example of a standard 4 sided roundabout with each road at 90 degrees to each other. Exactly like the one on the ad and in the ROTR.

It's fairly standard practice for people to use the wrong lanes on that roundabout. Every time I use it at least half the cars go straight through from the right hand lane.

In Limerick, coming from UL towards Parkway roundabout.
Lanes clearly marked, left lane to shopping center only, right lane for going straight or right. (bit of an odd one, but there you go)
It's even painted on the road FFS!
90% of people patiently waiting in the correct lane to go straight, but every now and then some bitch or bastard trundles past the entire line of traffic, pretends to go to the shopping center, only to "miss" his/her exit and then, getting ahead not being good enough, doesn't even try to get into the flow of traffic, but mostly tries to beat traffic into the exit, so he can jam himself in there and get ahead of one or two more cars.
These people know exactly what TF they're doing, they just couldn't be arsed to wait because they're better than you.
And why are they're doing it?
Because they know they're going to get a few disapproving stares and a few tut-tuts and that's it.
The Guards just plain don't give a sh*t, otherwise they'd be doing something, but in 10 years of suffering Limerick traffic I have yet to see ANYONE getting done for it.
So why do I actually care? Why do I obey the rules of the road and get punished with being delayed?
I should be the one who goes into roundabouts the wrong lane, races everyone around it and then put on my "tick and ignorant" face when I get stared at.
    I simply don't know why I bother...

Very well written and described - best laugh I've had all morning. Love the "tick and ignorant face" bit - see so many of those! :D

Anyone else notice some idiots in the outside lane of a 3 exit roundabout who indicate right but then take the 2nd exit left (ie straight)?? WTF??? Does my head in.

Know exactly what you mean lad, does my head in too.

But in fairness to AGS I have seen them twice in the past 9 months parked up at the parkway & two guards standing on the roundabout pulling in anyone who uses the clearly-marked parkway lane to try to ignorantly pull in front of us. Give out like sh!t to em too, I rolled down the window to listen :D

Not being sexist, but last time twas a 30s blonde in an x3 pulled in & a 60s lady in a micra gettin tickets. the x3 was hurling abuse at the gard, sayin he should be doin somethin better. Ignorant b!tch

Fair play to the gards for actually knowing that that roundabout is a problem

In some cases yeah but more often than not just a single lane exit even though there is two lane entry onto roundabaout, well certainly around this neck of the woods anyway!

I stand to be corrected but I believe this may be a RTR in Poland from talking to a Polish work colleague once. Taking the second exit on a roundabout in Poland one enters on right lane (being the reverse, because its left hand drive) with left indicator on in car and switches to other indicator when past first exit. Now don't get me wrong, not saying their right to do that just suggesting that thats why some folk, being foreign nationals perhaps do this at roundabouts?

I'm still convinced that my mother's going to die on a roundabout. Got her licence during the amnesty and will never listen to me when I tell her she's not supposed to be changing lanes whilst going around the roundabout...
