    righty, is there any physical differences i could look out for that might give the model type away?

    model number down the bottom give any clue?

    for reference, my 3gs is model a1303

    Open the camera app and check that the slider is there to allow you to switch to video mode.

    If it's a 3gs, the text on the back will be shiny. (on a 3g it'll be grey)
