Ford Focus erratic tempature gauge

    Hi,

I have a 2002 Ford focus, and recently I noticed that the radiator fan was coming on after only about 10 minutes of easy going driving (less than 50km/h). The other day I was on the motorway and the temp jumped right up to the red in just a few seconds, and then just as quickly it returned to the middle. It's doing this erratically so I'm guessing that the thermostat is faulty.

I plan on getting it replaced and the cooling system flushed at the same time as getting the timing belt done next month. Do you think I'll be alright until then? I have a 20 mile commute to work each day on the M50 so I'm worried that if this isnt a faulty thermostat I could be doing some serious damage...

    Thanks

You risk cooking your engine if the gauge is reading red occasionally, I would get it seen to today.

If the changes are very sudden I would guess a temperature sender/sensor or it's wiring is the faulty component.

If the thermostat was faulty the changes in temperature would not, most likely, be so sudden. Better get it checked as as soon as possibly anyway in case you end up cooking the engine.

PS. It's really difficult to kill the Zetec-SE even when driving without coolant. They have an emergency mode where the engine management cycles injectors on individual cylinders to prevent overheating. Instrument cluster has a dedicated warning lamp for this.
