Getting Experience with Blood Sample Analysis

    Hi there,

I hope this is the right place, feel free to move!

I have just finished my PhD and the Postdocs/jobs that I want to do usually require experience in blood sample analysis. I did not get the opportunity to do this during my PhD so Im wondering is there anywhere I could go to get this-on a voluntary basis.

I would be thinking simple HDL, LDL, cholesterol etc blood tests and My Uni doesnt do this. Do regular hospitals take on 'interns' or some sod like me who would do some of that kind of thing? Or where do all GPs send these blood samples for testing?

    Any insights would be great!!

All the GPs send them to hospitals. You could bother hospital labs, but you wont have much luck.
You could bother university research groups that are attached to hospitals, they might have acces to bloods. You can also email the relevant department of a college that does the course in biomedical science, you might have better luck during term time, or maybe in the next very short while, sometimes theres short courses run for continuous ed for the people already in the labs.

To be fair, if you;ve dealt with cell culture, extraction of the insides isnt much more difficult with blood. You could blag your way into the postdoc, blood samples are just samples with a different matrix...

What kind of postdoc position requires experience in blood sample analysis? Pretty standard stuff, IMO - it could be taught in a single day. Postdocs are supposed to be the intellectual driving forces of labs, not wasting their time doing a technician's job.
