I learned on a 10 year old Micra and never had any issues with it. Pretty cheap to run, cheap road tax, grand little car, only got rid of it cus I inherited my dad's car when he passed away.

Micra or Fiesta would be a good choice, plenty of them about.
What's your budget for the car?

Agree with Micra. You need a car that is not that big so you will have less difficulty with parking . Buy an old one that you wont care if you dent a bit. Two bits of advice:
    1. Car parks are deadly-drive very very slowly in them as you have cars on both sides of road . Ditto for petrol stations
    2. If out driving you get stuck-stick on Hazard lights. Lets other drivers you know you are in a spot of bother. There is a web site L Driver thats good to look at.
Sorry its Driving school of Ireland: Gives tons of useful info.

Something like this would be ideal imo
    Ford Fiesta 1.25

Any small car will do and i see in a later post you have 800 to 1200 to spend. Make sure whatever you buy has two years test and dont get anything bigger than a 1.2 engine.

Insurance wise whats your age? Their is a huge number of insurance firms out there not a lot of them well known so get googling and get as many quotes as possible. When you have your three cheapest ring those companies if possiable and tell them what the other companies are doing they might reduce their rate to get you on board.

Take lessons off a proffesional instructor as your friend/parent/neightbour will have bad habits that they may pass on to you.

I'm learning in a 97 Toyota Starlet 1.3 and I find it excellent. It's small so it's easy for parking and manouvers and really nippy so great for zipping into gaps in traffic or on roundabouts. Also, even thought it's 13 years old it runs perfectly, nice and smooth with no problems at all.

I'm exactly the same, but it's a 98 Toyota Starlet 1.3L. Never had any problems with it - a great runner. It's quite small as well so parallel parking is easy.

At that budget a Ford Fiesta or a Nissan Micra are your best bets.

If you can stretch your budget a bit with a couple more grand, then a Toyota Yaris is the best first car you could get. Its super reliable, cheap to run, plenty of space inside and will hold its value exceptionally well.

A Fiesta is probably a better car to drive but I think the Micra is more reliable.
